Ages 40–50

Change is coming — and you can prepare for it

Cycles shift and new symptoms appear. Understanding perimenopause turns confusion into confidence.

Understanding this stage

What is happening?

Perimenopause is the transition toward menopause, often starting in the forties (sometimes earlier). Hormone levels fluctuate, and that can bring irregular periods, hot flashes, sleep changes, and shifts in mood — sometimes years before periods stop.

This is also the decade to focus on the long game: heart health and bone health become especially important as estrogen declines. None of this is something to dread — with information and support, it's very manageable.

Reassurance

What's normal

These are common, healthy parts of this stage. Knowing them helps you feel at ease.

Irregular cycles

Periods may come closer together, further apart, or vary in flow.

Hot flashes & night sweats

Common, and there are many effective ways to ease them.

Sleep changes

Disrupted sleep is frequent during this transition.

Mood fluctuations

Hormone shifts can affect mood; support and treatment help.

Worth attention

What isn't normal

None of these mean something is certainly wrong — they're signals worth raising with a clinician. Orange means ask; red means seek care promptly.

Very heavy bleeding

Flooding or large clots should be evaluated — it isn't a normal part of 'the change.'

Bleeding between periods

Spotting between cycles deserves a check.

Symptoms disrupting daily life

If hot flashes or mood changes are hard to live with, effective treatments exist.

Bleeding after sex or very heavy flooding

Prompt evaluation is wise to rule out other causes.

Chest pain or pressure

Heart disease risk rises in midlife; new chest symptoms need emergency care.

Self-advocacy
